SLCC's Learning Outcomes
Students communicate effectively.
I will practice using the resources I have been given including my instructors rather than remaining quiet, and create balance between encouraging and constructive peer feedback.
Students develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
This summer I chose to take Statistics, which is a mathematics course based on scientific study and our thought process. As a future food scientist, participating in studies and knowing how to decipher the data and how to properly present it to the public without being bias is vital to the industry.
Students think critically and creatively.
Intercultural Communications taught me how to become more aware of the role I play in the world and encouraged me to experience new cultures and communities. By using different resources and engaging in more meaningful conversations with others, I am able to feel more confident to continue these strategies. For example, I work with a few Jehovah's Witness' and after asking them more about their background, I was invited to attend their annual service where I met some of the nicest genuine folks I have ever encountered and learned a lot about how their community works.
Students develop civic literacy and the capacity to be community-engaged learners who act in mutually beneficial ways with community partners.
As a past AmeriCorps member, I was thrown into a variety of leadership roles, including running the Donation and Volunteer Call Center for the deadliest tornado ever in recorded history at the young age of 19. Straight out of high school and I had daily conference calls and weekly in person meetings with FEMA, SEMA and the State Emergency Operations Center. With no prior knowledge, I later led groups of volunteers on building homes. I educated students on environmental issues and gathered supplies to build rain barrels and compost bins with them. All of these not only helped me gain skills during these moments, but they offered a new found way of thinking, of engaging. To immerse myself even when I may not carry all the proper equipment. SLCC is helping to guide me and gain the further skills to better adapt after I jump in to a new situation.
*This objective applies directly to what I learned in my U.S. Government & Politics.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to work with others in a professional and constructive manner.
I have been working full time since I was 18 years old and have had the opportunity to work a large array of position. From construction, to disaster relief, hospitality, childcare, trail building and much more I have learned a lot when it comes to working with others and how to professional engage. Since continuing my education at SLCC, my writing classes have helped me to
Students develop computer and information literacy.
My Statistics class taught me a lot about how to display information, including creating data tables and graphs. While Intro to Writing taught me new tools with writing and editing on Microsoft Publisher I had not been aware of before. Each class pushes me to better my computer knowledge.
Students develop the attitudes and skills for lifelong wellness.
As a future participate of the health and fitness industry, I focus primarily on being healthy as opposed to body image. As they will go hand in hand, I know no matter what my health and happiness are first and foremost. And when they start lacking, the other aspects of my life begin to as well.
